Program Objectives
The Master programs focus on cultivating students as international comprehensive talents who can serve the country and engage in sustainable development practices. RIEM has set up a postgraduate training program for economics, finance, management, social economics, public governance and sustainable development to improve the professionalism and practical ability of talents in this field, develop a more comprehensive international vision and flexible international communication skills.
The Master programs based on the core theoretical foundations of management, economics, and sociology, closely integrating with current issues of economic and social development both domestically and internationally. It primarily conducts research on topics including world economy, Chinese economy, development economics, regional and urban development, agriculture, environmental economics, energy economy, Social economics, social governance, poverty alleviation, and enterprise management. It aims to cultivate graduate students with high professional quality and strong practical abilities, enabling them to engage in research, consulting, planning, and management in related fields.
Based on the principles of "adapting to student needs, scientifically positioning students, cultivating students through classification, and teaching students according to their aptitude", The programs fully utilizes the academic abilities of teachers with international backgrounds, leverages local experience, and aims to cultivate high-level research capabilities, internationalized and creative professionals with broad and open international perspectives and creative thinking methods. These professionals are capable of solving practical problems and contributing to society.
Program cultivation Mode
The cultivation mode including: supervisor guidance, course teaching, scientific research training and academic salon, as well as social practice.
The supervisor plays a pivotal role in the cultivation process of graduate students. To effectively improve students' application and research abilities, corresponding measures are proposed, mainly including:
1. For master's degree students, a cultivation method based on mentor groups is adopted, under the premise of mentor responsibility, while leveraging collective cultivation.
2. Systematic learning and cultivation. The first year on learning basic compulsory courses and major courses, emphasizing basic training; The second year writing thesis.
3. Establish an annual graduate student seminar system and a collective discussion system for thesis proposal reports. Strengthen the atmosphere of academic activities.
4. Strengthen ties with well-known foreign universities. Implement a student exchange and visiting mechanism.
5. Strengthen academic training and the cultivation of thesis writing abilities.
Length of Studies
SWUFE has a flexible academic system. It takes students a minimum of two years and a maximum of four years to obtain a master’s degree.
The maximum length of study includes the time of suspension and retention of student status. Students who exceed the maximum length of study will not be registered in SWUFE.
Mid-term evaluation
Students must complete all coursework and participate in all required midterm registration and examinations.
Academic Research Training
Scientific research training provides a way for students to engage in scientific research while improving their research skills, academic levels, and writing skills. In order to improve research skills, students are required to actively participate in scientific and social research activities, declare postgraduate research projects, and write academic reports. RIEM instructors will actively guide students to integrate theory with practice, impart the scientific method, and establish specific requirements for the quality of students’ scientific research activities.
Thesis Proposal
Master students should determine the thesis topics in the third semester and complete their proposal report.
Topic selection should be conducted under the guidance of the supervisor, and the selected topic should be pioneering, progressive (with new insights), necessary for achieving results, and feasible for achieving results.
The content of a thesis proposal should include a literature review and a thesis proposal, the source of the topic selection, the significance of the research, the research trends at home and abroad (literature review), the main research content, the proposed research plan and technical route, feasibility analysis, key work difficulties, expected results and possible innovations, and the work plan of the thesis.
Social Practice (Optional)
This degree requirement is optional for international students.
Academic Degree Dissertation
Time and Workload: Students should begin writing their dissertations after completing coursework and obtaining the required credits. The workload of the dissertation begins with data collection and ends with the finalization of the paper.
Topic Selection: The topic must be innovative and practical as well as have theoretical or practical significance.
After selecting the topic, students will write a research proposal, and do proposal defense.
Before the official dissertation writing, should make a literature review, writing an outline, writing program.

Dissertation Detection: The dissertation should be submitted to the “Academic Misconduct Detection System” for plagiarism detection and be submitted for review after it has been qualified.
Dissertation review: The dissertation should be reviewed by at least three reviewers, including the adviser and one external reviewer.
Defense Committee and Defense Process: The defense process will follow the guidelines announced by the RIEM Academic Office. (The announcement will contain detailed information and reference the relevant regulations.) It’s required to reach HSK3 level before final defense.
