Time and Workload: After earning enough credits, doctoral students (under the guidance of their respective advisors) will conduct literature reviews and thesis proposals. They should complete these literature reviews and thesis proposals during their third year. The literature reviews and thesis proposals are worth 2 credits while the dissertation is worth eight credits. The literature review and thesis proposal must be submitted at least 12 months prior to the student’s preliminary thesis defense.

The student becomes a doctoral candidate after passing the preliminary report review. In principle, a doctoral candidate only focuses on writing his or her doctoral thesis and no longer takes elective courses. The College Graduate Training Committee will assemble a committee to review the doctoral dissertation as well as be present for the student’s dissertation defense. The doctoral dissertation defense committee is composed of three or four RIEM professors in addition to two outside experts.
Dissertation Writing: The doctoral thesis should be completed individually and in a timely fashion; additionally, it should be completed under the guidance of the student’s advisor. The thesis should reflect the author’s solid theoretical foundation, skilled application of professional knowledge, and potential to creatively contribute in his or her field of study.
A doctoral thesis can discuss several topics in the same field, or can encompass a variety of themes (provided that they are all relevant to the research). Students can separate the topics by using a chapter format, or by having distinctive, separate sections. Quality papers, in principle, have a minimum of 40,000 words.
